Senior Software Engineer, Recordkeeping

Human Interest

This is a Full-time position in San Francisco, CA posted January 5, 2022.

Human Interest is on a mission to ensure that people in all lines of work have access to retirement benefits.

Social Security, our nation’s retirement safety net, is projected to be insolvent as soon as 2035, making employer-sponsored 401(k) plans the primary retirement savings vehicle in the U.S.

Nearly half of all working Americans are not saving enough for their future because they are employed by a company that doesn’t offer a retirement plan.

Human Interest is changing that by making it affordable and accessible for small and medium sized businesses to offer employees a path to financial independence through retirement savings.

Our values are the guiding principles we use to build solutions for plan administrators and participants.

They reflect our point of view on what’s important and what’s right:

In it for customers, autonomous & accountable, outcomes driven, inclusive collaboration, and decisive.

As a member of the Recordkeeping team you will get to help build our ledger of record and trading engine.

You will collaborate with domain experts to design, build, test, and own systems and processes for servicing 401(k) plans and making our customers happy.

As reliability is key to earning our customers’ trust, you will build robust systems that are observable, maintainable, testable, and scalable.

What you get to do every day

  • Build and maintain business-critical software to process and record customers’ retirement savings
  • Improve complex processes and systems to make them more robust and require less human intervention
  • Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to share knowledge and build expertise
  • Write clean, high-quality code and tests while keeping the system fast and reliable
  • Convert product specifications and requirements into functional application code
  • Develop ownership over the record keeping domain and make informed engineering decisions
  • Participate in development life cycle activities like design, coding, testing and production release
  • Demonstrate focus on quality (unit testing, system testing, user acceptance testing) and product support ownership

What you bring to the role

  • Minimum 4 years of professional experience building and maintaining back end applications
  • Experience with TypeScript, Node.JS, SQL, Redis
  • Experience with task based or queue based systems
  • Strong communication skills; unpacking in-depth financial domain constraints/rules and discussing complex technical concepts to engineers and non-engineers is no problem to you
  • Ability to simplify complex/manual processes by automating them
  • Strong desire to learn, think creatively, and share knowledge with others
  • Proactive and empathetic mindset
    – you love to roll up your sleeves to fix problems for our customers

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge or prior experience with Event Sourcing and CQRS
  • Experience with production AWS deployments
  • Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices
  • Self-driven and willing to learn
  • Proficiency with Git as a version control system

Please feel free to apply to this position even if you do not meet 100% of the requirements listed above.
