The Boeing Company is seeking an Mid-Level Autonomy Research Lead (Software) based out of either Berkeley, Missouri or Huntington Beach, California.
Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T), the innovation engine of the Boeing Company, looking for an Autonomy R&D Lead (Software) to develop technology to meet growing demands in the development of autonomous vehicles across Boeing businesses.
Boeing’s autonomous platforms range from fighter aircraft to weapons to satellite systems to underwater/surface vehicles (e.g., the Boeing Wave Glider has the world record for the longest journey of an unmanned autonomous vehicle, from San Francisco, CA to Queensland, Australia) to commercial aircraft (‘flying cars’).
The role has a strong software focus – the Lead will help develop innovative autonomous capabilities in areas such as Detect and Avoid, Contingency Management, Multi-Vehicle Collaboration (Swarms), etc., for current and future Boeing platforms.
The development of these capabilities include multi-disciplinary skills
– algorithms development (including AI/ML), systems development and integration, knowledge of cloud computing/simulation at scale.
The Lead will help test/transition the capabilities with simulation, hardware-in-the loop, and flight test-beds; and onto the platforms themselves.
This is a leadership role – the Lead will coordinate activities across a global team of researchers.
Position Responsibilities: Develop, and deliver autonomy capability solutions, working closely with internal business stakeholders, across Boeing Develop algorithms for sensing, perception and decision-making (including AI/ML algorithms) Develop systems architectures, processes, tools to address unique verification and validation challenges, including certification Integrate application software, operating systems, middleware (including e.g., ROS overlays), and sensing/compute hardware, to develop/deliver complete solutions Use software best practices – requirements analyses, architecture, design, code, and test to develop solutions Use simulation-at-scale, and other methodologies to test different autonomy approaches Work with and guide a global team of talented researchers across BR&T’s global R&D centers/presence in Spain, China, India, Australia and Brazil Win and execute new business
– lead CRAD proposal responses to DoD (DARPA/ARFL/ONR/ARL) solicitations, etc.; support existing DoD contracts, e.g., our DARPA Assured Autonomy contract This position allows telecommuting.
The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.
This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S.
Security Clearance for which the U.S.
Government requires U.S.
Citizenship.
A final U.S.
Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience): Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry Experience authoring research papers within the industry and/or academia, etc.
1 years of experience programming with C, C++, C# and/or Python programming Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience): Ph.D.
from an accredited course of study in computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or mechanical engineering.
Prior experience with UAV and/or robotics development/testing Experience in simulation environments (e.g.
Gazebo) and autonomy toolset (e.g.
ROS).
Experience in hardware/software integration as well as software configuration management/development tools (e.g., Git) Typical Education/Experience: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g.
Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g.
PhD, Master3 years’ related work experience).
In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
