Join a high-performing dynamic team within Pacific Gas & Electric Company that is working in an exciting operational environment where we are transforming electric grid technology to support smart grid. Within the Electric Grid Operations Business Applications organization, we are a team called Operational Business Intelligence (OBI). OBI ensures safe, reliable and efficient utility operations through Business Process Management (BPM) and Continuous Improvement (CI) with the use of innovative Business Intelligence (BI). OBI owns and maintains self-serve data platform products such as the PG&E Electric OSI PI platform and data warehouses, engages with internal customers to evaluate their business processes, and builds and deploys BI solutions to improve those processes. The data platform products are being enhanced on a continuous basis and the number of BI solutions is growing at a rapid rate. Additionally, the OBI team is responsible for charting the path for the data strategy of the overall Business Applications organization. The customer base of the team includes Electric Distribution Operations, Electric Distribution Planning, Electric Transmission Operations, Electric System Protection, Substation Asset Strategy, Substation Maintenance and Substation Automation. We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as an Expert Data Scientist.

 

 

Position Summary

 

The Data Scientist will be developing a career for himself/herself filled with excitement! The utility industry is in the middle of a massive transformation. Energy generation is going from 100% centralized to significantly distributed. Operational decision-making and control actions are going from largely manual to largely automated. Technologies such as energy storage, electric vehicle, autonomous vehicle, robots, drones and machine learning are either already changing or are poised to change the way electric utilities operate. Sophisticated software applications are at the heart of all these changes. And it’s the Business Applications team that develops and supports these applications. As part of the team, the Data Scientist will be responsible for developing and providing support for these applications. This role has a lot of opportunity to learn new things and to come up with creative solutions to difficult problems. The Data Scientist must be able to work with individual contributors as well as leaders at different levels, such as supervisors and managers, and gain credibility and trust of both leadership and peers. The successful candidate must be able to work closely with team members, peers within the organization, external partners/vendors, internal customers and the IT organization to deliver high quality support and solutions for business users. A strong sense of ownership and accountability are required, to ensure the infallible quality of support and solutioning that is necessary in electric operations.

 

This position offers a flexible work location within the PG&E service territory.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Understand user requirements
  • Understand the data in different systems, such as OSI PI, data warehouses and various transactional systems
  • Fix data issues in the OSI PI system
  • Develop and maintain (issue resolution and enhancement) ETL jobs from various systems including OSI PI into MS SQL Server
  • Develop and maintain (issue resolution and enhancement) BI reports
  • Come up with innovative ideas to solve business problems using data
  • Document all work

 

 

Qualifications 

Minimum

  • BA/BS in Business, Engineering, Computer Science/Information Systems or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in data science or advanced analytics, OR Master’s Degree and 6 years relevant experience, OR Doctorate Degree.

 

 

Desired

  • 3-5 years of experience within any area of Electric Operations in the electric utility industry
  • 3-5 years of experience with scripting languages such as R, python, powershell
  • 5-7 years of mixed experience in OSISoft PI – architecture, development, system administration and end use
  • 3-5 years of experience in analyzing data and presenting the results
  • 3-5 years of experience in using relational databases – DML, DDL, DCL and TCL
  • 3-5 years of experience in developing and maintaining ETL jobs
  • 3-5 years of experience with Oracle Data Integrator (ODI)
  • 3-5 years of experience with SSIS
  • 1-3 years of experience with SSRS or Power BI
  • 1-3 years of experience in data quality improvement, especially in developing program to detect data quality issues
  • Understanding of data modeling concepts
  • 3-5 years of experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Ability to work independently and to take accountability
  • Ability to be creative
  • Ability to communicate in a concise manner
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
