Job Description The person in this role will provide communications guidance, strategy and support for Gilead’s Research, Development and Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing functions.
In close collaboration with the Leadership Communications team and cross functional partners, this person will help create and executive a long-term messaging strategy for Gilead’s senior leaders and support ongoing functional communications.
This person will also contribute interesting and relevant content for Gilead’s internal and external channels to demonstrate the company’s commitment to improving human health.
Additionally, the Director, Leadership Communications will flex, as needed, to work on cross functional projects with inputs from other functions, such as Human Resources, Commercial, Legal and Corporate Affairs and Finance.
This role reports to the Senior Director, Leadership Communications.
Essential Duties and Job Functions
• Provide leadership and functional communications guidance and strategy for Gilead’s R&D and Manufacturing organizations, including developing content for town halls, all-employee meetings, emails, social media, etc.
• Develop a deep, intuitive understanding of Gilead’s business—as well as the functional areas that this role supports—to provide the best possible strategic counsel to leaders and their teams, and to anticipate their communications needs
• As a member of the Corporate Communications team, surface interesting stories that support our company narrative and build engagement and passion for Gilead in our employees
• Consistently stay aware of current and relevant trends in communications, such as person-first and anti-racist language
• Together with the team, constantly push for new ideas, new platforms, new ways of connecting with employees; understanding what’s coming next, bringing these ideas to Gilead and interpreting them in a way that works for our audiences
• Together with the Sr.
Director, Leadership Communications, support senior leaders with internal and external speaking opportunities, including content creation, prep, and providing upward feedback
• Work closely with the employee engagement team to help leaders build morale and stay connected with their teams
• Build and maintain networks within Public Affairs, in R&D and Manufacturing, and in other functions to better understand the needs and sentiment of the employee population Knowledge, Experience and Skills
• Bachelors Degree and Twelve Years’ Experience OR Masters Degree and Ten Years’ Experience, OR PhD and Eight Years’ Experience
• Expert written communications skills, passion for telling stories well
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills
• Background in biopharma or science writing preferred
• Demonstrated executive presence, ability and comfort working with senior leaders
• Strong track record in employee communications and engagement
• A knack for navigating ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and agencies
• Ability to manage multiple, high-urgency projects simultaneously; flexibility is essential
• Strong project management capabilities
• Understanding of regulations and principles specific to communications for a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company
