You will be joining a group of dedicated professionals charged with leading Travelers to be able to endure catastrophic loss from natural and man-made perils.The PERILS team is a multi-disciplinary group focusing on peril research, the development of next generation analytics, event response activities, and risk reward analyses.
This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your scientific, analytic, and business expertise to perform flood peril research, and actively participate in developing our flood business strategy and product opportunities.
You will partner with other enterprise and business groups to develop our flood loss estimates utilized in risk reward evaluation, planning, pricing, underwriting, aggregation management, and business strategy.The PERILS team engages in complex, enterprise-wide, multi-disciplinary catastrophe research projects with various depths of focus.
This position requires an individual who can strive in an analytical, innovation-driven environment, in tune with business needs.We are seeking a candidate with a solid analytical base in a scientific, engineering, or related quantitative discipline.
The person will have effective self-organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work independently, as well as collaborate with other teams to formulate and execute project objectives.
We seek problem solving and critical thinking skills in support of the team’s efforts to provide best-in-class analyses to our business partners in catastrophe-prone areas.Primary Job Duties & ResponsibilitiesProvidethought leadership and lead our flood peril research, analytical, and business supportCollaborate with other subject matter experts in Enterprise Risk Management, Actuarial, Underwriting, Product, and Reinsurance to develop/implement our View of Risk for floodEvaluate and validate flood catastrophe probabilistic models and risk indices, engaging with catastrophe modeling companies, 3rd party vendors, universities, and business partnersIdentify, select, and extract relevant data from various internal and external sources.
Complete analyses and present recommendations to leadership and business partnersStay abreast of the latest scientific flood research, identify emerging issues and trends, summarize findings and potential materiality to current/future business strategyResearch emerging issues related to flood risk which may include weather trends, climate related risks, and new scienceProvide guidance for incorporation of climate change into Travelers View of Risk and business processes relating to floodParticipate in coordinated, real-time, event response for events that include significant potential for floodingDrive innovation through development/incorporation of new data elements, tools, and capabilitiesReview data quality or data capture gaps and provide recommendations for improvementDevelop approaches and metrics for Travelers to monitor flood exposures, aggregations, and peril-specific book of business changesSupport our Business Unit Consulting and Actuarial functions with ad-hoc research and peril strategy developmentCreate and maintain collaborative relationships with business partnersMinimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Sciences, Actuarial Science or related analytical STEM field plus six years of experience or any suitable and equivalent combination of education and work experience.Heavy concentration in mathematics, including statistics and programming, business intelligence/analytics, as well as data science tools and research using large data sets.
Additional verification of specific coursework will be required.Education, Work Experience, & KnowledgeAdvanced technical and scientific expertise in flood riskAdvanced knowledge and familiarity with flood CAT models and risk score toolsBusiness knowledge of flood underwriting and pricing preferredDemonstrated ability to convey technical concepts across professional fields of discipline.Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft suite, SQL, geospatial, statistical packages, or other programs used to retrieve and analyze data preferredIntermediate to advanced knowledge of insurance concepts, coverage, products, and operations preferredExperience with 3rd party data solutions including artificial intelligenceJob Specific Technical Skills & CompetenciesAdvanced knowledge of catastrophe models, model output, and metricsExperience with at least one of the leading vendor catastrophe modelsSignificant experience with at least one programming language preferred such as Python/R/Fortran.Analytical and critical thinking: Ability to find ways to use available data sources to answer questions and solve problems.
Ability to synthesize complex multivariate problems.Communication: Ability to communicate scientific, mathematical, statistical, and financial concepts to non-technical audiences.
