Position Summary

The Senior Medical Affairs Director will contribute to strategic planning, tactical execution and leadership in the Alexion Hematology Therapeutic Area (TA) in the US Medical team.

Responsible for providing strong scientific and medical perspective with an in-depth understanding of the Hematology medical landscape.

Contribute to the development and implementation of the short and long-term strategy for both inline and pipeline assets, aligning with overall Alexion organizational strategy and ensuring effective and meaningful cross-functional collaboration on the US level as well as providing a strong voice for the US perspective within the global medical TA.

Evolve the Alexion Global Medical Affairs mission to maximize patient outcomes by setting and continuously advancing the evidence-based medical standard of care as it relates to US data generation needs while contributing to global medical data generation efforts.

Medical Director – Hematology reports into the Hematology & Nephrology Therapeutic Area Lead in the US, is a member of the US Medical Affairs – TA’s Extended Leadership Team, and works cross-functionally in close collaboration with a number of Alexion Teams, namely on the US and Global level, e.g.

US field medical team for the TA, US Medical Excellence, HEOR Field Medical, Global Medical Communication, HEOR, Medical Operations, Clinical Development, VISion, Patient Experience & Insights, US Commercial, Pharmacovigilance, Epidemiology, Clinical Operations, and Regulatory Affairs as well as Legal and Compliance business partners

Principal Responsibilities

Develop and implement US strategy and plan for US MA activities for the Hematology TA by providing medical leadership, insight and strategy to the US Hematology medical affairs team across various internal functions.

Responsible for the following in the Hematology TA:

  • Lead on the situational assessment of the patient journey and the US product strategy development including harmonization of activities involving KOLs.
  • Develop in-year medical strategy and tactical plan for the US Medical Affairs team working closely with the TA Lead.
  • Implementation and budget plan for US Medical Team initiatives.
  • Provide medical strategic recommendation for in-line life cycle management (LCM) and late phase pipeline programs.
  • Lead evidence generation projects
  • Contribute with scientific and medical acumen to registration programs working closely with GMA
  • Contribute to Phase 3b/4 and ISR evidence generation strategy for late phase pipeline and in-line TA programs.
  • Contribute to clinical study design (non-registration phase IIIb/IV, registries, outcomes research etc.) for late phase pipeline and in-line Hematology programs in close collaboration with relevant functions.
  • Provide medical review and ensure alignment with Hematology strategy of Investigator sponsored research (ISR) proposals.
  • Provide clear strategic guidance regarding scientific communication, internal medical training, external medical education (CME, Symposia, medical education), Medical information, PEVT teams in developing functional plans supporting US medical strategy
  • Contribute medical perspective to commercial strategy as appropriate
  • Support TA lead with team’s performance in terms of goals and delivery of US medical plans
  • Serves as the medical expert and resource within ALXN in support of the therapeutic area.
  • Lead content development and presentation for external medical education programs and other Medical initiatives.
  • Develop, conduct, or contribute to therapeutic training programs for Alexion personnel.
  • Establishes strategic partnerships with centers of excellence and KOLs in areas of scientific interest and serves as conduit for flow of information both out to the medical community and into the company.
  • Working closely with the TA lead and Field Medical leadership in the development and execution of US KOL medical engagement strategy
  • Establish and/or enhance partnerships with key academic institutions and develop relationships with key thought leaders
  • Planning, designing and managing medical Advisory Boards and gather insight from regional/local medical Advisory Boards

Essential Qualifications

  • Must have a MD, PhD or PharmD level degree or equivalent
  • 5-10 years experience in Medical Affairs or other relevant industry functions
  • Proficient in Medical Governance, with solid knowledge of the regulatory and compliance regulations in the USA
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to thrive in highly matrixed environment
  • Team player with ability to lead and motivate a team, including remotely
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated track record and ability to drive results as an effective team member and project leader
  • Proven ability to manage budget and resources
  • Strong scientific, clinical and business acumen
  • Ability to build partnerships between across functions and geographies
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing environment
  • Excellent problem solving, organizational, and negotiating skills
  • Must demonstrate an energy and enthusiasm which brings a positive approach to all challenges
  • Strong sense of ethics and integrity
  • Travel required up to 40%
