Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS) is a Level 1a major interdisciplinary teaching facility with functional service lines serving medical, surgical, mental health, and long-term care inpatients and outpatients with an Emergency Department and multiple community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC).

Learn more about this agency Responsibilities The Registered Nurse (RN) in the specialty procedural setting is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the designated clinic area.

The RN demonstrates leadership in delivering efficient, comprehensive, and continuous patient-centric, holistic care through active collaboration, communication, and coordination of resources.

The RN works in partnership with the team and panel of patients for effective acute and/or chronic care, disease management, and population health management.

The RN uses the nursing process and evidence-based practice to collaborate with team members.

The RN is responsible for collaborating with services internal and external to the VA to facilitate coordination and transitions of care to effectively meet the patients’ needs.

The RN provides patient and family health education with a focus on self-management, prevention, and wellness, based on the patient’s health goals and needs.

The RN demonstrates leadership by serving as an advocate for patients.

The RN provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses.

The RN is responsible to participate in, and contribute to, the achievement of performance measures and institutional metrics.

The RN also provides nursing care and disease management to patients within the procedural setting.

The RN leads the nursing team, and manages and develops the nursing processes within the procedural area.

As a clinical member of the management team, the RN is to be responsible for the safe, effective and timely delivery of care and future development of the overall service, working towards achievement of practice aims and objectives.

The RN ensures that daily assignments and procedural responsibilities are made, prior to daily opening, based on current staffing and operational need.

Assures that staff respond appropriately to all drills relative to fire, safety, customer service, or emergencies.

Ensures adequate stock levels of supplies and medications are maintained.

Ensures proper disposal of regulated waste.

Disseminates information to the interdisciplinary team.

Serves as a resource for patient issues with interdisciplinary team members.

Assists leadership with planning, organizing, implementing, & evaluating clinic in-service programs.

Assists leadership with preparation for and achievement of Joint Commission and other regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Maintains professional environment for clinical practice.

Promotes a positive customer service image at all times.

Reports daily attendance of nursing staff to management.

Submits work orders for repair and notifies management of defective equipment.

Ensures proper documentation (i.e., JSPR, post fall notes, etc.) and reporting of any significant events to management in a timely manner.

Maintains Safety Data Sheet information and documentation of monthly assignments.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing.

Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript.

(Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I
– An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II
– An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor’s degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III
– An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II
– A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year’s of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master’s degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year’s of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III
– Master’s degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year’s of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year’s of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted.

All registered nurses with less than 12-months of RN experience upon entry on duty (EOD) date, will complete a 12-month nurse residency program.

The RN Transition-to-Practice (RNTTP) Residency Program complies with VHA Directive 1077.
