Musical Therapist

Mission Community Hospital

This is a Full-time position in Los Angeles, CA posted June 13, 2021.

Mission Community Hospital is a 145 bed acute care facility wth a 50 year legacy of serving the San Fernando Valley with compassionate care. We currently seek a Music Therapist (MT) able to work a Per Diem schedule.   

The Music Therapist is responsible for the rehabilitative components of evaluation and treatment of patients with emotional, cognitive and behavioral impairments in order to develop, improve or restore adaptive skills. Therapists working in the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Department coordinate the care of patients with the medical staff and multidisciplinary team embers related to treatment goals and interventions. They develop and implement a comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation therapy program deigned to meet the physical, social, cultural, and recreational needs of patients. Key area of responsibility include:   

COMMUNICATION   

 1.    Communicate effectively in written and verbal forms with patients, physicians, multidisciplinary team member, other employees and supervisor.   

 2.    Develop and maintain effective interpersonal skills with patients to foster and promote their participation in scheduled program activities consistent with treatment goals.    

3.    Develop and maintain skills in collaboration, cooperation, coordination and other related skills to participate effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team to promote a therapeutic environment.    

4.    Maintain communication with physicians and team members for effective resolution of problems, issues and concerns related to patient care.    

5.    Provide timely verbal and written communication, accurately completing all forms, reports and documents according to established criteria: •    Daily Statistics •    Attendance Record •    Patient Database, weekly notes and discharge summary     

6.    Attend and participate in case conferences as assigned.    

7.    Demonstrate a positive attitude to all patients, visitors and hospital personnel.     

CLINICAL  

1.    Demonstrate clinical competency in behavioral health theories and practices through the application of interventions to develop, improve and restore adaptive skills of patients.    

2.    Provide services for a defined case load of patients to perform the following functions: a.    Assess each patient’s mental and functional status utilizing appropriate tools and techniques such as observation, interview and chart review. b.    Formulate rehabilitative treatment plan that identifies treatment goals to assist the patient: •    Diminish symptoms which interfere with activities of daily living. •    Establish goals to utilize strengths and interests and support growth and change. •    Develop coping mechanisms to maintain an optimal level of independent function. •    Attain outcomes of treatment goals established by the multidisciplinary team. c.    Identify and utilize treatment modalities to assist patients in achieving their goals. d.    Document treatment goals and intervention in the multidisciplinary treatment plan maintaining compliance with the plan. e.    Evaluate patients’ progress toward goals and response to interventions, documenting findings weekly and adjusting the treatment plan accordingly. f.    Consult with physicians and multidisciplinary team in regard to patients’ progress and status. g.    Assist each patient to establish a discharge plan congruent with identified treatment goals and includes involvement in leisure and social activities.    

3.    Conduct Recreation/Art/Music or Dance therapy sessions according to weekly schedule and in compliance with each discipline’s Standards of Practice as follows: a.    Evaluate treatment needs of patients in assigned caseload b.    Provide relevant interventions c.    Document attendance d.    Interface with the clinical staff regarding significant change in patients    

4.    Conduct therapeutic groups as requested by supervisor and based on needs of the patient population.    

5.    Maintain clinical competency in respective scope of professional practice as Recreation Therapist, Art Therapist, Music Therapist, or Dance Therapist including certification/licensure in discipline and in MAB, CPR, Infection control, Fire, disaster, safety, etc.    

6.    Utilize concepts of continuous quality improvement to evaluate patients’ participation in scheduled group activities including appropriate revisions to enhance participation.    

7.    Maintain appropriate personal hygiene and hygiene and appearance including dress/attire and shoes for scheduled activity groups and hospital setting. Adhere to hospital dress code.    

8.    Adhere to all policies and procedures of the unit such as confidentiality of information, patient rights, safety, fire, disaster, evacuation and accountability for patients.    

9.    Complete all the clinical assessment in the initial treatment plan according to hospital policy.   

Qualifications:  

1.    Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree and/or certification (CTRS/RTC, ATR, BC-DMT, MT-BC).   

 2.    Thorough knowledge and understanding of rehabilitation therapy theory and the ability to apply principles in a psychiatric facility/program.    

3.    Acceptable to contracting hospital (if applicable).    

4.    Excellent verbal and written skills.    

5.    Current CPR, Fire and MAB ; or will receive CPR within two weeks of hire and Fire and MAB within probationary period.
