Licensed Veterinary Technician, NYC Mobile Clinics

This is a Full-time position in New York, NY posted December 19, 2021.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) for the New York City mobile clinic program is a trained and licensed full-time LVT who assists in providing spay/neuter surgery and preventive and basic medical care (Primary Pet Care—PPC) to pet dogs and cats living with their families in New York City.

Services are provided on a mobile unit parked at designated locations within targeted areas of the city’s five boroughs.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician is responsible for the daily care of approximately 25 spay/neuter surgery patients, including the management and administration of anesthetic/analgesic agents and other medications. The LVT must also handle the flow of animals through the spay/neuter clinic from intake, to induction, recovery and discharge of surgery patients, as well as preparing the clinic for the following day’s surgery load. These duties are to be performed in accordance with the Community Medicine department standardized techniques and other standard operating procedures.

When the LVT is assigned to a Primary Pet Care clinic, they will assist the veterinarian with exams, diagnostics, treatments and client communication.

The Licensed Veterinary Technician reports to the Medical Staff Manager and takes direction and instruction from the clinic veterinarian regarding medical protocols and patient care.

The schedule is 10 hours per day/ 4 days per week. Weekend work will be required. The position reports daily to one of our Mobile Clinic locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Occasional flexibility in work hours, reporting location and overtime is required.

Responsibilities:

Medical (65%):

  • Provide excellent patient care in all perioperative phases for approximately 25 cats and dogs per day.
  • Use Fear Free techniques for animal handling
  • Administer injections such as anesthetics, pain medications, vaccinations, and other medications. Provide treatments, and supportive care as directed by CM Standard Operating Procedures and attending Veterinarian.
  • Intubate animals, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture and administer fluids as needed.
  • Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in preoperative, operative, and postoperative phases.
  • Ensure that anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly report to Manager.
  • Assist with patient exams, perform diagnostic testing. Prepare medications to go home with the client/patient as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Maintain all necessary controlled substance drug logs and patient records.
  • Assist with CPR/autotransfusion at the direction of the attending veterinarian.
  • Provide support and medical services for clients of Community Engagement (CE) and other ASPCA departments as needed including evaluation of animals living in hoarding situations.
  • Assist with humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols.
  • Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols.
  • Maintain medical supplies inventory, including emergency drugs. Ensure that supplies are in-date.

Customer Service (25%):

  • Communicate in an effective and professional manner with public clients and all ASPCA staff members, including Veterinarians, Senior Veterinary Assistants, the Community Engagement team, and Patient Liaisons.
  • Know basic veterinary medical concepts, including, but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Be able to communicate such information to clients.
  • When Veterinarian has documented information about an animal’s condition, adequately explain such information to clients.
  • Represent the ASPCA in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

Administrative/Other (10%):

  • Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments.
  • Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Fill out all client forms and rabies certificates
  • Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Must be able to lift and carry 40-plus pounds repeatedly throughout day with assistance., Must have current New York State Veterinary Technician License., Must have graduated from accredited school of veterinary science technology (2 or 4 year program)., Must have strong interest in animal welfare., Must possess excellent animal handling skills., Must possess excellent customer service skills., Must possess the ability to work standing for 8-plus hours, Must speak fluent English. Bilingual (fluent in English and Spanish) preferred., Surgery/Anesthesia experience preferred
