To manage Central Sterile Supply Department, Employee Health Program, Immunization Program and all required regulatory requirements related to Infection Control.

Provides surveillance, reporting, prevention and control of infectious diseases and infections, to promote employee resistance and minimize exposure to infectious diseases.

Ensures that appropriate safeguards are instituted to identify and prevent infections in patients, employees, and visitors.

Required Skills

  • Conducts Annual Risk Assessment and Develops the BBAHC Annual Infection Control Plan required by CMS and the Joint Commission.
  • Facilitate continuing education of hospital staff in infectious disease and prevention by providing Inservice Education to BBAHC employees on a regular basis and maintaining current record of attendance.
  • Serves as an Infection Control resource for all BBAHC Departments’ adherence to and compliance with recommended Infection Control guidelines and assists the Department Managers in generating and evaluating competencies related to Infection Control.
  • Participate in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of the BBAHC Infection Control, Employee Health, and Central Sterile Supply policies.
  • Manages the Employee Health Program.
  • Conducts Employee Health screenings for all new employees and manages the follow-up requirements for Employees who have positive titers for certain types of diseases.
  • Tracks Employee health data and assures that annual screenings and required immunizations are completed on time.
  • Manages and Supervises Central Sterile Supply department and employees within that department.
  • Assures that the Central Sterile Supply is compliant with all required standards under the CDC and the AAMI.
  • Manages and supervises Immunization Program and employees within that department.
  • Serves as an Infection Control resource for all BBAHC Departments’ adherence to and compliance with recommended Infection Control guidelines and assists the Department Managers in generating and evaluating competencies related to Infection Control.

    Ensures all staff are instructed in proper Infection Control measures.

  • Participates in the BBAHC Environment of Care Committee, Quality Performance Improvement Committees and other committees as assigned.
  • Participates in the BBAHC Management Nursing Team.
  • Participates in budget formulations and may negotiate with vendors as appointed by the CNO.
  • Coordinates surveillance and investigation of Infection Control issues with necessary collaboration with Community, State, and Federal agencies, including maintaining required OSHA documentation records.
  • Contributes to BBAHC’s compliance with OSHA, and The Joint Commission standards and requirements.

    Generates data reports for submission to the Performance Improvement Coordinator and Medical Staff as needed.

  • Interacts with patients, families, visitors, professional and non-professional health care providers within BBAHC on a professional basis and may represent the Nursing Department in community organizations.
  • Assesses patients using Nursing Assessment skills and techniques
  • Assesses and manages pain in accordance with the Physician orders and patient’s needs when applicable.
  • Provides culturally appropriate care that is in line with the Physician’s orders and patient’s cultural beliefs.

    Seeks clarification when/if there may be a conflict between the two

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  • Registered nurse with a current Alaska State license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher degree preferred.
  • Successful completion of a course in Infection Control and Certification through the Board of Infection control is recommended.
  • Must have knowledge or job experience in the areas of epidemiological principles and infectious diseases, as well as sterilization and disinfection practices.
  • Must be able to conduct research, analyze and report findings for Infection Control issues.
  • Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms of potential infections or epidemics.
  • Ability to teach infection control and employee health measures to all BBAHC employees, and to manage a comprehensive infection control and employee health program.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Must be able to maintain a professional standard of ethics at all times and observe confidentiality regulations established by BBAHC.
  • Knowledge of native culture preferred and must be willing to embrace BBAHC’s Mission— “To promote health with competence, a caring attitude, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Be able to travel to villages as necessary.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit.

    The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span (e.g., pediatric/adult/geriatric) and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the assigned unit’s policies and procedures.”
