Clinical Nursing Director – Critical Care

Providence Portland Medical Center

This is a Full-time position in Anchorage, AK posted December 27, 2021.

In this position you will:

RESOURCE UTILIZATION:

Accountable for factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing and other services.

Utilizes staffing management principles to assure adequate supply of all necessary staff to perform patient care.

Plans for seasonal fluctuations and anticipates market changes which may impact volumes.

Explores options for expanding services and providing different services, operationalize options in collaboration with leadership to meet patient care needs.

Exercises independent judgment to implement plans for operations in areas of responsibility.

Develop, implement and maintain the annual operating budget to meet hospital strategic goals and support functions involving staff and physicians, as appropriate.

Ties budgetary function to Strategic Planning of department.

Demonstrates stewardship for financial resources actively leading and participating in cost control programs as established by the organization.

Monitors financial performances and takes timely constructive and corrective actions.

LEADERSHIP:

Provides visionary leadership in the professional practice setting.

Uses leadership principles to anticipate and influence change.

Determines resources and actions needed to accomplish objectives, advocating for necessary resources.

Proactively identifies potential problems/opportunities and plans contingent action.

QUALITY OF PRACTICE:

Systematically enhances the quality & effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing services administration & the delivery of services.

Actively leads & participates in quality improvement, health & safety, & environment of care programs as established by the organization.

Working collaboratively with the staff, providers, and leadership team, develops, modifies and implements patient care standards, policies, procedures and protocols.

Establishes clear clinical practice expectations based on professional standards for areas of responsibility.

Working collaboratively with the staff, providers, and leadership team, develops and implements the unit-based QI plans, incorporating appropriate aspects of the PH&S quality strategic plan.

Indicators are identified and improvement processes utilize PDCA structure.

Assures that Quality Improvement targets, action plans and concurrent data charts are posted in all units and that staff is engaged and supported in meeting / exceeding these targets.

Intervenes as needed.

Values and uses customer feedback to optimize necessary services, addressing issues and requests, and intervening in a timely manner.

COLLABORATION:

Assigns work and responsibly directs staff.

Creates systems that enable staff to jointly plan and deliver care, providing them with the skills and knowledge so they can have authority over their practice.

Role models and collaborates in partnership with staff, physicians all appropriate departments, patients and families to promote optimal patient care and customer service.

Models and mentors PH&S Standards of Service Excellence.

Establishes, nurtures and role models collaborative and supportive relationships with staff, physicians, health care facilities and the statewide community.

Develops relationships and networks with in PH&S.

Collaborates with colleagues within the organization for the purpose of furthering the goals and objectives of PH&S and PAMC.

COMPLIANCE:

Directs and administers assigned functions to ensure high quality, cost-effective patient services which meet or surpass accreditation standards.

Maintains and guides the implementation of organization policies and procedures in compliance with state, Federal and other regulatory guidelines.

Assures adequate preparation for, and participate in, regulatory compliance surveys.

Participates and encourages patient safety initiatives, variance reporting, and root cause analysis.

Prepares and submits reports on operations as required, including audits as requested.

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EVALUATION:

• Maintains leadership, managerial, organizational & technical knowledge of areas of responsibility.

• Role models personal development and education.

• Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations.

Assumes responsibility for obtaining information and expanding job knowledge and competency that reflects current practice.

• Obtains managerial specialty certification as applicable.

COLLEGIALITY: Interacts with & contributes to the professional development of peers & colleagues

ETHICS: Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice.

Follow the “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services” developed by the U.S.

Conference of Catholic Bishops.

RESEARCH:

• Integrates/translates research findings into practice.

Stays informed of current evidence-based protocols & standards for the management of patients in the area of responsibility.

Collaborates with physicians and staff to incorporate these protocols and standards into patient care.

• Advocates for and assists in the development, implementation and modification of programs and services needed to meet patient care and staff development needs.

ADVOCACY: Advocates for the protections and rights of individuals, families, communities, populations, healthcare providers, nursing and other professions, and institutions and organizations, especially related to health and safety.

HUMAN RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP:

• Provides a work setting that results in outstanding staff satisfaction with resulting outcomes of high retention rates and no ‘controllable’ turnover.

• Directs and administers assigned positions and functions to ensure high quality, cost-effective patient services which meet or surpass accreditation standards.

• Uses appropriate interpersonal skills to guide others to accomplish objectives, facilitates teamwork, participation and cooperation.

• Delegates work so subordinates have the necessary direction, authority and skills to complete assignments.

• Working with clinical staff, physicians, and CNE selects, develops and evaluates department leaders and management teams.

• Reviews annual performance with each direct report staff that reflects validated competence.

Sets goals for upcoming year that are in alignment with PH&S.

• Develops and promotes talents of the team and succession planning.

• Counsels staff appropriately and is competent in conflict management.

Seeks creative methods to resolve conflicts.

Initiates personnel actions in accordance with Human Resource policies and organization’s philosophy.

COMMUNICATION:

• Consistently employs a variety of communication methods best suited for all staff to ensure two-way communication and collaborative monitoring of facility operations and targets.

• Makes regular clinical and leader rounds a priority to support PH&S initiatives.

• Schedules regular meetings with direct report staff to provide supervision, assure communication and to monitor facility operations.

Serve as Chief Nurse Executive’s (CNE) designee as assigned by the CNE in hers/his absence.

Implement care/services that recognize age/diversity specific needs/issues of customers served.

Qualifications :

Required qualifications for this position include:

• Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing.

• Master’s degree required or will be obtained within 30 months of hire.

• Either Bachelor degree or Master’s degree must be in nursing.

• 3 years in a leadership role.

• RN, Licensed in Alaska.

• Certification in management or clinical specialty within 12 months of hire.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card must be from American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Cardiac ICU experience

• Acute Care Manager experience
