GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performedWorking quite independently, performs specialized techniques for immunohistochemical studies.

Immunohistochemical testing is primarily done on paraffin-embedded and frozen surgical specimens, as well as fluids or fine needle aspirations, using many different antisera.

Interprets test results and independently troubleshoots complex problems.

Evaluates laboratory protocols or procedures and recommends appropriate change.

With minimal supervision, evaluates new antisera.

Ability to document daily QA/QC with consistency and accuracy.

Assists lab supervisor in organization and assignment of daily workload.

Orients and trains residents, fellows, students and less advanced technologists.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position.

These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

Working quite independently, facilitates the organization, scheduling, and performance of work in a technical area.

Serves as a technical resource for other laboratory technologists.Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received.

Demonstrating the highest level of interpretive skills, interprets results of tests, distinguishing negative results from failed study.Ability to perform all the functions of a histology technician.Working quite independently, performs immunohistochemical studies with appropriate controls for cell markers on paraffin sections, frozen sections, and cytocentrifuge preparations (e.g.

cerebrospinal fluid, fine needle aspirates, pleural fluids, etc.) using a variety of both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies (over 100 reagents currently in use), and a wide variety of specialized techniques.

Runs standard tests on surgical cases.

With minimal supervision, evaluates new antisera and works out procedures for diagnostic application.Prepares specimens for immunoperoxidase reactions by snap freezing and cutting frozen sections; prepares buffers, rinsing solutions and staining solutions.Under very minimal supervision performs immunohistochemical and other phenotypic analyses of tumors which are the subject of ongoing research.

With minimal direction tests new antibodies for research studies.Assists supervisor in the organization and assignment of daily workload.Assists in maintenance of a soft tissue tumor bank, involving snap-freezing surgical material, cataloging such material, maintaining the freezer and also storing paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed material for teaching and research purposes.Independently trouble shoots problems in lab, consulting with laboratory supervisor as necessary.

Evaluates protocols and recommends changes.Orients and trains all residents, fellows, students and less advanced technologists.

Adheres to all established safety and infection control policies.

Follows all OSHA guidelines.Prepares materials (e.g.

slide sets) for teaching purposes and seminars.Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.

Verifies that all QA/QC has been done.Maintains inventory of a large number of reagents and other supplies in lab.

Follows established protocols for proper storage and maintenance of quality control for all reagents and other supplies.Maintains equipment in proper working order and obtains maintenance as necessary.Orders lab supplies as necessary.Maintains bookkeeping in regard to specimen logging and completion of work assignment.Performs and documents quality control testing and, if needed, corrective action taken, according to established protocols.Participates in proficiency testing.Complies with all technical standards and policies established by the Technical Director.Follows all National Patient Safety Goals and related BWH Laboratory and Hospital policies.Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS:Must possess a minimum of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in a biological/physical science or equivalent, with courses in immunology and histology or equivalent training.

Previous experience in a laboratory setting is highly desired.

Computer skills highly desired.

Other qualification as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1351 -1495.2-3 years of experience as a histology or immunohistochemistry technician.HT (ASCP) certification required.

HTL(ASCP) highly desiredHistology experience in preparation of cryostat and paraffin sections and ability to perform a wide variety of special stains and immunohistochemical procedures.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Demonstrates the highest level of technical and interpretive skills.Ability to perform the functions of a histology technician.Knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology (preferable for optimal function, though lab is highly specialized), mathematics.Excellent organizational skills to cope with an extremely busy work schedule associated with a wide variety of techniques which must be handled accurately and expeditiously.Must function independently in dealing with specimens and their proper handling.Manual dexterity in handling tissues, cell suspensions, preparing tissue sections (cryostat sections, paraffin sections), equipment handling, etc.Visual acuity for fluorescent studies, cytochemical and immunolayer staining reactions.

Must assess validity of control reactions.On own initiative, ability to identify potential problems and trouble shoot problems as necessary.Must have aptitude for technical problem solving.Good interpersonal skills required for interactions with physicians and technicians from other laboratories.EEO Statement Brigham and Women’s Hospital is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
