Public Service Officer

Position Purpose Functions as a lead worker overseeing the daily activities of school crossing guards who escort elementary children across hazardous streets to ensure that all school areas are properly staffed for the safe street crossing of school children walking to and from school, or Performs administrative duties and lower priority police work to assist police officers and citizens at division stations and in the field or notifies citizens of outstanding warrants and handles inquires regarding warrant notification and department procedures. Essential Functions Assists with interviewing, hiring, and training school crossing guards providing them with all the information necessary to implement their duties to ensure appropriate staff is available to meet the needs of all school areas. Makes and changes work assignment to school crossing guards to ensure all school areas are covered. Observes school crossing guards in the field to ensure safety procedures are followed and evaluate their performance. Processes all administrative paper work related to school crossing guards, struck child, prepares daily activity sheets, time cards, complete scheduling and payroll and file all appropriate accident reports. Investigates complaints about school crossing guards with citizens and school officials by questioning involved parties to promptly address and resolve concerns. Monitors school zones, signs and markings for the crosswalk completes necessary paperwork for any correction or changes. Issues parking citations for violation of school zone, or Responds to low priority (level 3 and 4) calls, complete police reports and provide department program information to assist citizens. Operates telecomputer call-out system to notify citizens of outstanding warrants. Files and retrieves paperwork such as reports and subpoenas to respond to citizen or police officer requests. Performs research regarding arrest warrants to provide information to citizens. Gathers and complies numerical data to prepare manpower and activity reports for police officers. Maintains and distributes equipment and vehicles for police officers. Direct traffic at crime scene to allow police officers time to investigate crime. Working Conditions & Hazards: Normal office conditions. Subject to all weather conditions when observing school crossing guards and coordinating the removal of abandoned vehicles, OR Work indoors the majority of the time, however, incumbents are required to report to crime scenes in all weather conditions. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of public contact experience. EQUIVALENCY(IES): Thirty (30) college semester credit hours will meet the education and experience requirements. LICENSE(S) and/orCERTIFICATION(S): Valid driver’s license with good driving record. OTHER REQUIREMENT(S): Eighteen (18) years of age. Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test. No FELONY or Class A MISDEMEANOR convictions. No Class B MISDEMEANOR convictions within the last ten (10) years. Availability to work various shifts. PREFERENCE(S): Computer data entry skills. Ability to deal with unruly prisoners. Disclosures The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications. For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position. Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
