Principal Platform Architect

The Azure Platform Architecture team is at the forefront of technology and system design, leading the way for the next generation of systems.

Our mission is to architect the most cost-effective and performant solutions that power Azure.

Creating the platforms that power one of the largest hardware deployments on earth requires deep technical knowledge and partnership across many teams.

We are looking for a Platform Architect with experience in Storage and/or GPU systems to join our team.

This individual will act as the subject matter expert for a solution vertical, helping articulate and define our next generation hardware platforms.

This requires working across multiple domains including electrical, mechanical, thermal, performance, and serviceability to find the right solution.

Microsoft Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (CHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission.

CHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions.

  • Lead the hardware architecture for next-generation platforms, balancing the requirements for the business with available technologies and design capabilities
  • Distill and articulate architectural tradeoffs encompassing electrical, mechanical, and thermal inputs in terms of key metrics such as cost, risk, performance, and schedule
  • Partner with the engineering groups and planning organizations to understand how the solution space is evolving over time, and drive architectures and platform designs that can scale multiple generations
  • Drive and influence technology providers and design partners towards optimal components and solutions to meet the future requirements for Azure
  • Partner within the industry and standards bodies to creates standards and form factors key to next generation solutions.
  • Create architecture specifications for both platforms and key design components
  • Collaborate with the hardware development team to ensure seamless transition from architecture to implementation

Qualifications Required Qualifications:

  • B.S.

    Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent experience

  • 10+ years of computer/server/storage design.
  • Demonstrated expertise in storage and/or GPU platform design
  • PCBA design experience including schematic, layout, routing, and stackup analysis
  • Ability to analyze architecture solutions from a full TCO perspective including but not limited to COGS, CAPEX, Power, other system cost constraints
  • Strong communication skills to influence and partner across many facets of the Azure hardware and engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hyperscale experience in storage or GPU designs
  • Platform level architectural expertise highly desired
