As a Director of Product Architecture at Micron Technology, you will develop and lead an organization comprised of memory system architects responsible for defining optimized solutions that are focused on next generation datacenter, networking and client systems for the Compute and Networking Business Unit (CNBU).

You will establish a deep understanding of Micron’s technologies and capabilities, as well as key market trends and competitive landscapes.

You will be responsible for ensuring strong technical relationships across the industry with system architect and technologist functions and drive the strategy for Micron’s engagement in technical conferences and consortia.

Your organization’s role in those industry engagements will be to drive pathfinding discussions, influence design-in decisions and negotiate product requirements with our ecosystem partners and customers.

Internally, you will partner with technology development, design, test, and product engineering organizations to ensure successful implementation of new product concepts.

You will, also, work closely with Product Management and Business Development to ensure that each technical decision is aligned with our business strategy, and to ultimately take the products to market.

Responsibilities:

Manage the architecture organization

• Recruit and cultivate top technical talent, including engineering Managers and Lead Architects
• Contribute to the development of business and technical strategy
• Determine key objectives for the group that tie to CNBU and Micron business strategy
• Delegate and manage the group workload to ensure optimal performance and achievement of objectives
• Regularly report team progress to leadership

Defining and driving key elements of the internal company-wide technical strategies and processes for DRAM

• Develop strategy for standardization of products – related to which consortia to engage, when to engage, and defining what content should be standardized vs held proprietary
• Communication plans and transparency levels on key technical issues for customers and partners
• Create and administer business processes for pathfinding, system architecture analysis/development, product planning and development – utilizing a deep understanding of:
  • Internal strategic business objectives
  • Internal pain points related to technology development, resource constraints, cost, capex, and product plans
  • Customer and enabler problems to solve with memory solutions
  • Competitor strategies, solutions and capabilities

Ensure that the architecture organization is delivering on the following responsibilities:

Developing strong cross-disciplinary understandings of the full solution space, including:

• Fabrication process – including CMOS and interconnect capabilities
• Design implementations within our products
• Device functionality and associated standards – memory, storage, and digital logic
• Package and module design
• Computing architectures – ISA’s, microarchitectures, microcode, and compilers
• System design and configuration – processors, accelerators, NUMA domains, memory hierarchy
• System thermal, physical form factor and power considerations
• System interconnects – protocols and PHY’s
• System firmware / software functionality and associated interface standards
• Infrastructure design, management, and monitoring
• Key applications – workloads, benchmarks
• Performance, power, cost, complexity, quality, security and RAS implications of solutions
• Hardware emulation and system simulation techniques – open source, co-sim

Understanding customer requirements and developing new solutions for compute and networking applications

• Drive pathfinding discussions in the industry to understand the problems to be solved, priorities, and optimization points for customer systems
• Analyze technology trends in the industry
• Analyze competitive solutions
• Develop and identify key benchmarks
• Define and drive feasibility studies and system performance analyses
• Support and assist successful design-in of new solutions 

Owning the product specifications and technical documents related to new technologies 

• Create new product concepts and intellectual property
• Create and maintain internal product design requirements 
• Determine design targets based on required optimization points
• Work with manufacturing, test and product engineers to ensure that the product requirements consider our execution capabilities for optimal business performance
• Create and maintain customer product specifications 
• Contribute to Micron’s internal technology roadmap
• Contribute to test verification and validation plans
• Educate and train internal groups to aide in producing new technologies 

Engaging with the market as technical experts

• Develop relationships with counterparts at key customers and ecosystem enablers 
• Participate in standards organizations to create proposals and specifications
• Drive technical meetings with key customers and ecosystem enablers
• Participate and speak at industry conferences
• Generate technical whitepapers 

Qualifications:

• 10+ years in an engineering role related to semiconductor products and/or computer architecture
• Direct experience managing an engineering team
• Direct experience in a system or memory architect role is preferred
• Experience in participating in standards organizations, like JEDEC, is preferred
• Experience creating detailed technical specifications and engineering documentation
• Working knowledge of best practices in silicon product development – related to specification, architecture definition, design implementation, validation/verification, and system integration
• Significant domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas is preferred:
  • Memory and/or storage device design – DDR4, DDR5, HBM, GDDR, NVDIMM
  • CPU, ASIC, or memory controller design
  • High-speed interconnects
  • Datacenter and enterprise workloads and benchmarks
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Ability to travel both domestically and internationally

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field
• Master’s Degree in engineering, management and/or MBA is preferred
