The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division, within the Computing and Computational Sciences (CCSD) Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) currently seeks applications for the position of Chief Data Architect.
The Chief Data Architect will be challenged to apply creative thinking and approaches to technical data challenges at scales expected to match the unprecedented computing power only available within the DOE National Laboratory complex and specifically at ORNL.
With an ever-expanding portfolio of data science centric computing, there is need for a forward thinking, but operationally savvy individual to join our team to address the fourth paradigm of data-intensive scientific discovery.

Job Duties and Responsibilities : In this role you will be expected to: Use data architectures expertise to support strategic initiatives and strategic partnership programs as a data solution architect from the conception and capture phase through the initial implementation phase.
Work with subject matter experts across a variety of domains to help translate into well-defined technical requirements, and technical solutions.
Research and design experimental solutions to data science and architecture challenges that meet expected metrics based on data-driven requirements.
Present and defend architecture, design, and technique choices of proposed architectures to internal and external audiences.
Communicate and document technical solutions to the NCCS system users and the project team.
Partner with the Directors of Science and Director of Facilities and Compute to understand needs, champion for capabilities, and support implementation within the NCCS ecosystem.
Identify reusable and innovative software solutions and algorithms for a data science and architectures portfolio.
Establish collaborations within ORNL and with other national labs, academic, government, and commercial organizations that promote the visibility and reputation of the division and ORNL.
Support recruiting, selection, hiring and mentoring of the technical staff.
Serve as a subject matter expert to the directorate in the areas of data engineering, data architectures, and resource utilization, as needed.
Represent ORNL and NCCS by developing high quality papers highlighting our accomplishments, engaging with the scientific community at conferences and meetings to understand current state of data challenge, and interact with industry partners to develop next generation capabilities Qualifications Required: M.S.
in Computer Science or related field.
5 years of experience in designing the state-of-the-art, large-scale data science platforms and frameworks for federal, state, or commercial organizations.
10 years of programming and software engineering experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.
As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
Preferred Qualifications Ph.D in Computer Science or related field and 10 years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated experience to efforts to operationalize and scale to production bleeding-edge technologies in order to meet production SLA requirements related to reliability, availability, performance, ease of use, and security.
Demonstrated expertise in the areas of traditional data warehousing and business intelligence solutions Represented thinking and reputation for modern Big Data platforms and the applicability of AI frameworks to scientific problems Familiarity with HPC parallel processing platforms, languages, and algorithms.
Specialization in data storage format and access methods optimizations for large data analytic platforms.
Exceptional communication, planning, collaboration, and customer service skills.
Domain data expertise in the areas of healthcare and defense, specifically familiarity with healthcare security policies (HIPAA), national security related applications, and Department of Commerce regulations pertaining to export control and ITAR.
Greater than 10 years experience in designing systems that handle different modalities of scientific and national missions relevant data (structured and unstructured), storage (monolithic, federated, distributed, etc.), and modes of analysis (real time, batch, interactive, etc.).
History of engagement with Department of Energy and national laboratory complex, especially leadership class computing.
