Behavioral Health Peer Mentor (Peer Support Specialist)

DCCCA is looking for qualified, capable professionals to fill the role of Peer Support Specialist, with our Behavioral Health program in Lawrence , Kansas. The Peer Support Specialist position offers a wealth of personal and professional rewards that allow you to make a difference as well as a living.

DCCCA, Inc. provides a full continuum of alcohol and drug treatment designed to help individuals struggling with substance use. Peer Support Specialists, specially trained adults with lived experience and role models for recovery, are being sought to support and expand a Douglas County initiative. The initiative is designed to help people access social detox services in Northeast Kansas and take the first steps toward recovery. Peer Support Specialists are available during scheduled shifts to interact with patients in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. Full and Part time opportunities are available. Shifts will require evening and weekend hours.

Position Overview:

  • Provides information and support to individuals in the hospital Emergency Department who are assessed as medically stable and in need of detox services
  • Encourages individuals to participate in social detox and facilitates admission in contracted regional providers
  • Engages family members and other supports as appropriate
  • Facilitates transportation to the social detox resource using an agency provided vehicle
  • Uses electronic clinical record to complete required documentation
  • One full time and one part time position work within the Emergency Department during scheduled shift
  • Additional part time positions remain available during scheduled shift to respond to the hospital within one hour of being called

As a vital member of our Behavioral Health Services team, the Peer Support Specialist should be service-oriented with a passion for helping others. Active listening, professionalism, and excellent communications skills are required for success in this role.

Additional requirements of the position include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Minimum 2 years demonstrated personal recovery experience
  • Completion of Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services 15 hour approved Peer to Peer Mentor education program within six months of employment
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Must pass pre-employment background checks and drug screening
  • Requires both flu and COVID-19 vaccinations
