Set up and operate one or more gear grinding, wheel dress and balancing machines to produce rough and finish ground splines, spur and helical gears.Typical ResponsibilitiesFollow standard operating methods, gear summaries, part drawings, blueprints, charts, formulas and general instructions to set up and operate gear grinding and associated wheel dress and balancing equipment. Use a variety of hand tools, gauges and dial indicators to install involute cams, yokes, arbors, work piece, etc. Use optical equipment to present wheel dresser tools; balance and dress wheels as required; install and adjust position of work piece to obtain specific parameters, such as involute, crown, pitch and root diameter. Determine grinder settings such as feed rates, wheel shifts and work slide limits. Perform numerous interrelated changes and angular adjustments, following various mathematical calculations, formulas, procedures and observations to maintain very close tolerance and quality standards. Indicate work between bench centers prior to loading grinder, clamp work in holding device, indicate part, check and record work piece pitch and root diameters prior to grind and monitor machine operations.Analyze errors in gear charts and adjust the machine set-up and program to correct problems.Check finished part prior to unloading and obtain any required dimensional verification. Visually check parts for finish, root profile and for indications of surface burn or tempering.Maintain records of all finish dimensions and obtain inspection acceptance of finished part.Correct any dimensional discrepancies as indicated by inspection. Assist, direct, instruct and set up for two lower grade machine operators as directed and refer all unusual conditions to Working Leader or Supervisor.Perform difficult repair and salvage operations.Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level as related to gear machining and check work of other operators as required.Perform operator checklist as required and comply with all EH& S procedures.As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.May be assigned to carry out tasks, not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this job description in support of department objectives and to develop individuals skills.Basic Qualifications:Requires knowledge of characteristics and grinding qualities of metals. Make calculations involving shop mathematics and handbook formulas in order to work from fairly complicated operation sheets and to use gear summaries.
