About the Organization: The Office of the Provost is charged with overseeing all aspects of education, research, and public engagement of the university.

In support of that goal, the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning was created as a one-stop shop to support faculty teaching and learning needs.

The director for Online operations, works with Mason faculty, staff, and partners to support Mason’s online strategy through partnerships with academic departments, enrollment management, operations, legal, finance, marketing, ITS and other functional areas.

The team works to help faculty create innovative, authentic learning experiences that address 21st century educational challenges across disciplines, modes of delivery, and global boundaries.

Position Description: The Director for Online Operations oversees the daily operations for Mason Online, including coordinating student services across Mason and working directly with partners in the delivery of online programs.

Develop and Support Teaching with Technology: The Director for Online Operations is responsible for the management of online program implementations, including coordination with marketing, enrollment operations, registrar, student support, external partners and other key departments.

In addition, the Director manages Mason’s third-party providers that support online undergraduate and graduate programs, and works cross-functionally to create best-in-class processes that support a growing online student population.

Core Responsibilities: Support Mason’s online strategy through partnerships with academic departments, enrollment management, operations, legal, finance, marketing, ITS and other functional areas; Support relationships with Mason’s current and potential partners for online program management; Coordinate internal and external enrollment and program analysis and work collaboratively with Mason’s schools and colleges to synthesize these assessments into growth plans and product roadmaps; Negotiate the intersection of online student needs and the needs of Mason’s schools and colleges to offer solutions and support; Develop project charters and supporting documentation, manage communication and track project status and risks; promote clarity and transparency in online projects and initiatives; Conduct regular brainstorming meetings and feedback sessions with the academic and administrative partners in order to uncover opportunities and efficiencies; Manage the Digital Learning team’s operating budget, ensuring that financial resources are efficiently used; Support the piloting and evaluation of new online initiatives that further enhance and develop Mason’s existing programs and student services; Conduct and communicate program reporting to ensure departments are aware of enrollment projections, market insights, and performance.

Required Qualifications: A Master’s degree in business, project management, education, instructional technology, instructional systems design or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience; Ability to work with multiple partners in building consensus and relationships while managing the prioritization of competing requests in a deadline-driven environment; Strong negotiation, interpersonal, and team-building skills; Experience in higher education setting and ability to work in a university environment; Conversant in adult-centered pedagogy to support learning; Conversant in strategies for supporting the service needs of an online student; Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, simultaneously; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Three or more years professional work experience providing project support and account management to university stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with cross-functionally to plan online initiatives; Expertise collaborating in an agile development team; Experience applying performance and other key learning data to course re-design; Demonstrated high degree of independence and initiative; Experience understanding the needs of adult, non-traditional learners; Two or more years of experience in business development and partner engagement.
