JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Director
– Blood Bank and Transfusion Services provides leadership and direction to Blood Bank and Transfusion services across the Marshfield Health Care System.
Responsibilities include monitoring and input into overall departmental/service management including strategic planning, the employment of personnel, continuous process improvement, compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements, financial review and new service development.
Incumbent also serves as medical director and provides oversight for the cell processing lab and apheresis collection of hematopoietic cellular therapy products for the MMC-Marshfield Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant program.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Plans and implements research and education activities for physicians and non-physician staff.
Strengthens and builds collegial relationships with internal and external referral physicians and services.
Provides leadership to quality improvement initiatives including liaison to medical staff and QI Committee in reporting on quality indicators and action taken.
Physician oversight and medical directorship of area/center of service.
Interacts with physicians, medical staff, patients, administration, government, and other agencies as appropriate.
Provides on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed.
Oversees that the physical plant and environmental conditions of the lab are appropriate for testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
Oversees that reports of test results include pertinent information required for interpretation.
Provides consultation to the laboratory’s clients on matters relating to the quality of the test results and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions.
Participates in development of strategic and operational plan for service and reports annually to Administration on progress.
Manages, coordinates and/or collaboratively develops new service opportunities.
Oversees that laboratory personnel have adequate, documented education, training, and experience, and ensures the provision of educational programs to maintain highly skilled staff.
Participates in planning process for capital, FTE and operational budget.
Specifies in writing if duties are delegated to other appropriately qualified individuals, and remains responsible for ensuring these duties are properly performed.
Reviews the proficiency testing reports to identify corrective action and that corrective action plan is followed when any proficiency results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.

Oversees and manages the apheresis collection service and associated procedures and regulations for autologous hematopoietic cellular therapy program.
Oversees hematology and coagulation services as they relate to transfusion medicine.
Has up to date knowledge of alternatives to blood transfusion and blood management initiatives and strategies.
Provides oversight of cell therapy processing.
Provides confirmation that lab personnel are following standard operating procedures for accurate and reliable results.
Oversees establishment and maintenance of quality assessment programs and identification of failures in quality.
Oversees and validates that prior to patient testing, all personnel have the appropriate education and experience, receive proper training, and can perform testing operations reliably and accurately.
Oversees policies and procedures for monitoring and ensuring competency in all phases of blood bank management and transfusion medicine.
Oversees development of an approved procedure manual that is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of testing.
Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: MD or DO degree from accredited medical school
Preferred/Optional:
EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in laboratory medicine.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse physicians and medical staff groups, including provide consultation on difficult immunohematology cases, aspects for preservation of cell therapy products and utilization of blood products.
Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred/Optional: Three years’ experience as practicing physician in Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine area.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position.
Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Board certified in Clinical Pathology and Board certified/board eligible in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine (American Board of Pathology).
Valid current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license.
License to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin.

PATIENT POPULATIONS SERVED
Individuals hired are expected to serve patients of different ages, backgrounds, etc.
When performing the essential functions of the role, the individual must identify the patient age group to be served and apply the appropriate care based on the patient’s age and background.
The hiring manager is responsible for communicating the patient population generally encountered in the role and is responsible for ensuring the appropriate cultural, age and related training needed to serve the patient populations.
