Job Purpose The Head of Community Banking Group is accountable to the President, US Retail & Digital Banking in leading and managing the growth and profitability of the organization’s Personal Banking, Small Business Banking, Community Development and CRA Strategy activities.
The role drives the development and execution of business strategies to increase acquisition of new clients, maximize share of wallet, , establish and attain the Bank’s CRA goals, while continuously improving client satisfaction results.
Areas of responsibility include Community Banking (Branch Network), Community Banking Operations, Residential Mortgage Banking, Small Business Banking, Community Development and CRA Strategy.
In fulfilling the mandate, the role is accountable for sound business management, regulatory, credit and operational risk management, profitability and expense management of the business segment.
Key areas of accountability include: Create and implement client acquisition and retention strategies to increase market share and share of wallet.
Understand market opportunities and potential for the specific client segment.
Become actively involved in the community, with key industry associations, advocates and clients.
Develop a client-centric relationship management team focused on creating value for clients.
Create a culture of operational excellence compliant with regional and global governance policies.
Lead the teams responsible for Community Development and CRA Strategy and ensure their success in both meeting the goals of the organization and compliance, legal and regulatory expectations.
Oversee the first line of defense as it relates to compliance, operational risk, and enterprise risk management.
Manage all credit risk within the business units as it relates to consumer lending, community development lending, small and micro business lending.
Sales and Business Development Contribute to Community Banking’s business strategy and plan in alignment with the organization’s strategic priorities, goals and objectives and based on a deep understanding of the market.
Lead the advancement of the Community Banking’s profitability and market share through effective execution of the plan and outstanding client and employee experience.
Deliver client offers in accordance with Personal and Small Business Banking core strategies, regulatory and risk management requirements, and brand standards.
Provide leadership and guidance to Community Banking Group team to ensure individual and business plan goals are achieved and/or exceeded.
Create an environment that fosters exceptional sales and service culture, supports partnering behaviour, and capitalizes on individuals’ expertise and knowledge of the banking business.
Deploy a client-centric sales team across the Community Banking network with a strong focus on maximizing profitability, growth, and customer loyalty.
Assume an active role in representing CIBC Bank USA and CIBC to build relationship with the community, centers of influence, government agencies and regulatory bodies.
Develop close partnerships with Community Banking leaders and CIBC Bank USA Bank leaders to capitalize on referrals.
Operational Effectiveness and Governance Create a culture of operational excellence to ensure compliance with credit and operational governance requirements and policies.
Ensure best practices are shared and leveraged across all teams including product and market opportunities, processes and initiatives to enhance operational effectiveness.
Support ongoing training and skill development at the individual and team level, leveraging national training initiatives within markets to maximize benefits to the business.
Implement strategies to enhance the employee experience, increase operational effectiveness and create a team that champion the vision and values of the organization.
Ensure technology is used to its full benefit and enables the group to effectively deliver its business and sales processes.
Manage and promote strong relationships with key internal partners including business and functional leaders and governance and controls groups.
Ensure transparency through development and use of metrics managing sales, lending, risk, and CRA (lending, investment and service) activities.
People Management Provide leadership and effective management of department staff to influence employee commitment to the organization and to the team.

Regular contact with representatives in the community, centers of influence, government agencies and regulatory bodies for purposes of business development and relationship building.

As a key contributor to the business unit, the role has authority to influence business and sales strategies in alignment with CIBC and CIBC Bank USA overall goals and priorities Qualifications In-depth knowledge and experience of the retail banking business, financial services practices, principles, systems and processes.
Highly developed leadership and sales management ability in order to lead and develop world-class sales force in a highly dynamic business and economic environment.
Results-oriented and strong ability to deliver to aggressive financial and business growth targets and strategic initiatives.
Solid understanding of operational, regulatory, risk management requirements and controls as it relates to retail banking systems and processes and the Community Reinvestment Act.
Knowledge of strategic, business and financial planning processes, market and organizational knowledge.
Strong communicator and relationship management skills in order to establish key relationships with clients and leaders across the organization.
Proven managerial leadership, able to lead and develop a team of professionals and prioritize effectively.
Sound judgment and problem solving and ability to make key complex decisions independently and with clear thinking and sound logic.
Takes ownership of decisions and actions, keeps key executives and stakeholders informed of critical issues and remains steady in the pursuit of corporate goals and objectives.
