Financial Controller – Holding Company

This is a Full-time position in Zionsville, IN posted July 6, 2021.

Summary

Empowered Ventures, a growing Indiana-based ESOP holding company, is looking for an experienced Financial Controller to perform holding company level accounting, finance, HR and administration activities.

Essential responsibilities include establishing and performing consolidated GAAP financial reporting processes, monitoring and supporting portfolio companies’ accounting, reporting, budgeting, and internal controls processes, ESOP plan administration, treasury administration and cash management, financial projections and planning, year-end audits and reporting, board of directors reporting, and consolidated benefits management (401k, health, etc).

This position leans towards functional ownership at the holding company level (not having any direct reports) while also working with accounting and HR personnel at portfolio companies in a dotted-line leadership and supportive capacity.

The ideal candidate will be a current or former CPA, with at least 7 years of combined public and corporate accounting experience, strong business acumen, great communication skills, and the ability and desire to work 100% remotely.

Prior employee stock ownership retirement plan (ESOP) experience would be a huge plus, though not required.

A strong belief in the benefits and potential of employee ownership are required.

Responsibilities

Own the consolidated accounting and reporting function at the holding company level Establish internal control, accounting, and reporting standards for portfolio companies, and coordinate and support portfolio staff as needed to meet requirements Own and complete all ESOP plan administration including annual census, valuation, repurchase obligation studies, etc Deliver value by providing financial analysis, projections, modeling, etc.

(i.e., FP&A) Involvement with due diligence and other activities surrounding acquisitions Attest to month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing process and accuracy Ensure all financial reporting is in accordance with GAAP Responsible for system of internal control to safeguard company assets Lead efforts to streamline financial reporting and metrics Responsible for executing cash and treasury strategy across various entities Manage business insurance at the holding company level and support operating company insurance programs including P&C, D&O, EPLI, GL, WC, etc.

Verify and approve various tax filings throughout the year Responsible for supervising and coordinating all financial audits including CPA firm, government and insurance agencies, etc.

Responsible for implementation of any audit recommendations based on findings Make recommendations for change to existing procedures to improve efficiencies Holding company general bookkeeping and administration Additional duties and special projects as needed

Qualifications & Requirements
CPA certification is required Bachelor’s degree from accredited university in accounting or finance required; MBA is a plus Minimum 7 years of relevant experience Minimum 2 years public accounting experience Prior experience with ESOPs is a plus Proven track record with financial modeling, projections and analysis Exceptional verbal and written communication skills Extremely high attention to detail and standard of accuracy Must be highly skilled in use of Excel spreadsheets and other accounting and reporting software programs Significant comfort with software and improving processes with technology Ability to work independently as well as in a team Ability to work effectively both remotely and travel periodically for site visits, company gatherings, etc Strong intellectual curiosity and willingness to take on additional responsibility
