Job Title: Laboratory Director

Job Summary:

The Director of Laboratory services has 24 hour responsibility for planning, organizing, staffing, and directing all functions and activities of the hospital’s clinical laboratory services for optimum output, efficiency, and integration with other hospital departments to achieve the hospital’s goals. Laboratory services include the departments of hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, coagulation, serology, point of care testing, and pathology. The director of laboratory supervises all laboratory personnel, including laboratory department leads, point of care coordinator, clinical laboratory scientists, laboratory assistants and clerical staff, and reports to the COO, while working with the laboratory medical director to maintain excellent clinical standards.

Essential Job Duties:

ï‚· Supervises the administration and delivery of both in-patient and out-patient laboratory and pathology services, including pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients, while supporting the hospital’s mission, vision, values, goals, policies and procedures.

ï‚· Participates in multidisciplinary committees and holds regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication of information, ensures staff participation in similar activities, and keeps the associate administrator informed.

ï‚· Reviews, regularly, all laboratory departments’ quality control, preventive maintenance, reportable ranges, reference ranges, proficiency testing, performance improvement and participates in joint improvement projects with other hospital departments.

ï‚· Works closely with the medical director and other hospital departments and laboratory staff to investigate, resolve and report incidents, instrument problems, LIS problems, and initiates improvements that can be implemented in a timely manner.

ï‚· Assesses the competence of the laboratory/pathology staff and ensures continued competency through staff education and development.

ï‚· Manages human resources effectively within the areas of responsibility and in collaboration with other hospital departments, providing direction and setting expectations consistent with the goals of the organization.

ï‚· Manages financial resources effectively within the areas of responsibility and in collaboration with other hospital departments, providing direction and setting expectations consistent with the goals of the organization.

Leadership Functions:

ï‚· Effectively manages financial resources within the areas of responsibility including labor management, productivity, supplies, and other resources.

ï‚· Ensures optimal provision of services through sound personnel management.

ï‚· Demonstrates leadership skills including the ability to plan, prioritize, organize, analyze, execute on multiple tasks and in collaboration with other hospital departments, providing direction and setting expectations consistent with the goals of the organization.

ï‚· Demonstrates behaviors commensurate with the Vision, Mission and Values and Behavioral Standards of the organization.

Communication/Knowledge:

ï‚· Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate with various individuals both inside and outside the organization; and able to understand and create reports/presentations/proposals.

ï‚· Possesses strong leadership skills including the willingness to pursue roles with increasing levels of accountability, coaching, teaching, inspiring, forging alliances, and collaborating to negotiate resolution to issues.

ï‚· Ability to work under stressful situations.

ï‚· Proficient with computer systems including but not limited to MS Office.

Education/Experience:

ï‚· A Master’s Degree in Science or Business and a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Science from an accredited institution and five years experience in a clinical laboratory setting, including at least three years of progressively responsible experience in leadership roles; or a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Science from an accredited institution and at least 5 years of supervisory laboratory experience.

Licensure/Certifications:

ï‚· Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
